2006 Taster Courses
Here are pictures from the 2006 Taster Courses and some comments made by students
who attended:
(The pictures from 2005 are also online)
With the dedication and support from various people in the department, we have
just completed a very successful series of Taster Courses and Summer Schools
this year. All these events were attended by about 800 different students between
the 12th June and 18th July 2005. These events are Materials in Medicine, Materials
in Dentistry, Seeing into the Future, Materials with Forensic, IOMMM + RSC Teachers
day, Year 8 Redbridge Science Challenge, Year 12 Health Summer Schools, Year
11 and Year 10 Summer Schools. The events were co-organised by Caroline Jee
and Kirsty Johnston and were championed by Liz Tanner, Andy Busby, Asa Barber
and James Busfield. The feedback from all the students is very positive and
we hope to see a good number return to enrol at QM in the future. A BIG thank
you everyone who has supported and made these events successful, especially
Mick, Zofia, Rory, Monisha, Tara, Teaching Assistant Team and the Summer School
Assistant Team.

"The diversity of the courses was very
interesting plus engaging. I especially enjoyed the angioplasty activity
and the biomaterials activity."
"I loved the drug delivery as I understand what was happening. I
loved the angioplasty as it was about the heart and the cardiac blockage."
"The demonstrations were helpful for me to have a taste of medicine
related materials. It inspired me to study this course in this department."
"I liked the friendly atmosphere of the taster course. It was very
relaxing and enjoyable, this coupled with diverse array of experiments
and demonstrations enabled us to have first hand experience of various
scientific demonstrations, such as Scanning Electron microscopy. I especially
enjoyed the talk given by Luca about the applications of biomedical materials,
as it gave us a valuable insight and appreciation of the importance of
biomedical materials engineers."

Materials in Dentistry
| "The teachers were friendly. The hands on experience
and the different materials we got to use. We actually got to use the materials
we would use in dentistry."
"It was great how they showed us how things are used in materials
in dentistry and enabled us to take the tasks on ourselves. It also got
me to get a larger and a broader view on the course and got me to meet
other unknown people (also to work with them in a group)."
"I liked the fact that it is us doing practical things. If we were
just given lectures, we wouldn't have learnt much, but the fact that we
did it practically helped us understand better. Also I enjoyed Dr Andy's
introduction lecture - it was very informative."
"Well structured plan for the day and interesting activities. The
taster day is not too long so makes the experience that more interesting."

"I enjoyed working in a crime scene, using real forensic
equipment and the fact we were competing with each other."
"I got to dress in the CSI suits and taking finger prints although
I covered most cabinets in finger printing powder. I got to use the Scanning
Electron microscopy machine and seeing first hand how good it is. I also
enjoyed meeting new people."
"I enjoyed the end court case, presenting the ideas found to support
a particular verdict and to share the evidence to the rest of the class.
I have also enjoyed making clay moulds of the shoe prints in the sand."
"The whole day was a thrill and a change to my usual A-Level subjects
so I will have to say I enjoyed the change and the difference to my Monday.
I think it was very enjoyable and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys
interesting things."

Seeing into the Future
| "I liked that we are allowed to ask a lot of questions
and that we were allowed to have a free-flowing lesson where you didn't
have to sit and learn through reading or doing quiet activities. I liked
the egg challenge also as it allowed you to be inventive."
"The things I like most about this course is the friendly organisers,
the hands on exercises, competing against other groups in the materials
challenge exercise and getting a short look on the university life"
"The people were more than willing to converse and friendly. Although
we were learning, it wasn't really like school as we know it, which is
good."
"The day gave me a good insight into other possible courses for
university and the group activities looking at polymers and the F1 structure
was well organised and very interesting."

"The challenges were really good. I learnt a lot of
things and seeing the different elements of material science"
"I liked making new friends in the different mixed groups. I also
liked working together with my other school mates. It was very interesting."
"I liked the interesting topics that we learnt about and being able
to take part. I especially liked the forensic, the levitation using liquid
nitrogen and the eggercise."
"I enjoyed the eggercise most. This is because I got to work with
people from my school and we got compete with the other schools!"

IOM3 + RSC Teachers Day
|
"The interactive nature of the course runs by experts who were clearly
well prepared and able to pitch the information/demonstration at the right
level. All were very approachable from the introduction drown to the prize
giving ceremony!!"
"Content applicable to GCSE Science. Use of the material will interest
and motivate students. I found out about appropriate summer schools for
students. Enthusiastic, friendly and helpful staff."
"Well organised, a variety of activities. Well presented by each
person (and well explained). All activities relevant and appropriate to
students at BTEC NC/HNC level."
"Useful to me as a teacher of A Level chemistry and biology. I can
use the practical experience to enhance teaching of both subjects. I can
explain to prospective students more about what materials science involves.
Many thanks!"
