Title of talk: Assembling Cellulose in Water and Other Solvents

Abstract: The talk will discuss the way in which nature “processes” cellulose and the opportunities for using water as means to orient and structure this material. The influence of water on the mechanics of cellulose will be presented and initial work on self-assembly of the material for the production of fibres. In addition to this the use of ionic liquids for the spinning of cellulose into high performance fibres will be presented. The techniques of Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction will also be presented as approaches for the analysis of molecular deformation and molecular/crystal orientation.
