X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy - MRI Graduate Training

Date: 2 December 2015   Time: 12:00 - 14:00

MRI training afternoons are designed specifically for PhD students and post-docs, but more generally for anyone interested in learning about the topics. This event will be about Characterisation Techniques. There will be refreshments served at 2pm providing a chance to network with your colleagues.

An introduction to x-ray absorption spectroscopy will be provided together with an in-depth look into experimental methods, theoretical description and data analysis. Information content and capabilities of the technique in nanoscale, disordered/glassy systems and under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature will be considered.

• History of XAS

• Modern EXAFS theory

• Experimental techniques

• Temperature effects

• Effects of disorder

• Size effects: XAS in nanostructures

• EXAFS analysis

• EXAFS and XANES
