”The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Nanocomposite Strain Sensors for Future Healthcare Devices” , Dr Conor Boland, University of Sussex

Materials Physics is a recently-established stream of research at Sussex, led by Professor Alan Dalton, Dr Alice King and Dr Conor Boland, which focuses on understanding structure-property relationships in nanomaterials, particularly two-dimensional nanomaterials such as graphene and molybdenum disulfide. Our research seeks to use low-cost, scalable solution processing techniques to develop these materials towards applications including printed electronics, strain sensors, energy storage devices, and bio-interface materials.

Abstract Electrically conductive nanocomposites are an exciting ever-expanding area of research that has yielded many versatile technologies for wearable health devices. To create these materials, a plethora of nanomaterials and processing methods have been applied. Despite the large amount of research invested, to truly realise their commercial potential there must be more consideration for what intrinsic nanocomposite properties control electromechanical response. Furthermore, the desired properties that facilitate commercial application defined. In this seminar we will discuss pathways towards commercialising nanocomposite strain sensors.

Bio Dr Conor S Boland received his PhD degree from the School of Physics at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 2016. That same year he joined the Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research (AMBER) Centre at TCD as a senior commercialisation research fellow. In 2019, he joined the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Sussex as a Lecturer in Materials Physics. His research focuses on material discovery and applying nanomaterials in novel nanocomposites for electromechanical and energy applications.
