Newham College partners in with Queen Mary University London and London Institute of Transport Technology

MRI's Professor James Busfield Newham College has led the partnership to form one of twelve Institutes of Technology, backed by £170 million of Government Funding, to help provide 'high-quality skills training'' to young people, particularly students looking to take up vocational courses.
London Institute of Transport Technology (LITT) is one of only 12 bids in the UK to be awarded provisional IOT status by Department for education. The LITT is a partnership between Queen Mary University of London & Newham College of Further Education, with support from key employers, Greater London Area and the London Borough of Newham. It will focus on supporting young people with high-level skills and provide employers with the workforce they’re looking for in the transport industry.
The mission here introducing a network of Institutes of Technology is to support young people taking up vocational courses; create high-quality route to gain technical skills and qualifications instead of going to university.
Education Secretary Damian Hinds said:
“These new Institutes of Technology will be the pinnacle of technical training – new collaborations between universities, colleges and business to make sure young people have the skills they need to build a well-paid rewarding, career, while the economy gains the skilled workers it needs to be more productive.
The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz, has welcomed the announcement that 12 institutes of technology have been announced as part of a £170 million Government funded plan.
"The institute will be vital in supporting our local economy to thrive where local residents can access training and develop skills making them fully prepared to take advantage of this evolving digital and technological age. I see this latest achievement as a major step forward in developing a Newham talent pipeline that not only specifically prioritises local people in developing new skills, it will help raise aspirations of our young people to be at the forefront of meeting the world’s demand."
LITT will be based in a new, state of the art, a purpose-built training facility at Albert Island, due to open in 2022.
