Seminar: MRI SEMINAR Dr. Ana Isabel Borras, Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Sevilla - Synthesis and applications of 1D and 3D supported nanostructures developed by plasma assisted vacuum deposition methods

Details: One dimensional (1D) materials are pillars in nanoscience with applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics and photonics, energy storage and scavenge, catalysis, biomedicine and fluid manipulation. This topic has experienced a huge growth during the last two decades and recently reached the stage to move forward from the academia to the technological development. Nevertheless, there is still urgent need for the study from the fundamental point of view of these nanostructures and, overall, for the research on low cost (economical and environmental) procedures for their production in high rates with a strict control on composition, structure and microstructure. In a step forward, the synthesis of heterostructured 1D materials such as core@shell and core@multi-shell nanowires and nanotubes provides a straightforward route for the fabrication of multi-functional nanostructures that opens the lead towards the realization of single-wire devices and optimization of high-density arrays devices. We have developed during the last years a reliable full vacuum / plasma-assisted methodology for the fabrication of supported heterostructured nanowires, nanorods and nanotubes with controlled shells composition, microstructure and porosity that very recently has been extended to the formation of 3D nanostructures (Figure 1).[1-6] Several examples will be shown for the fabrication of semiconducting organic and inorganic nanotubes and core@shell/multishell nanowires and metal decoration of 1D nanostructures on processable substrates with advanced performances as superhydrophobic and wetting controlled surfaces, waveguides, photoelectrodes in solar cells, piezoelectric nanogenerators and nanosensors.

Biography:
Since 2011, Ana Borras holds a tenured position in the Spanish National Scientific Council (CSIC) under the profile Materials for Photonics. In 2010, she was awarded with a Ramon and Cajal Grant. After completing her PhD about the Development of TiO2 nanostructures by plasma technology in the University of Seville in 2007 (Prof. Gonzalez-Elipe) she moved as a postdoc to the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, EMPA-ETH (supervised by Dr. Pierangelo Groening), where she focused on the synthesis and applications of small-molecule nanowires and organic nanocomposite thin films. She currently works in the Nanotechnology on Surfaces Laboratory of the Materials Science Institute of Seville (CSIC-University of Seville). This group is devoted to the vacuum and plasma assisted deposition of thin films and coatings where she leads the research line Multifunctional One Dimensional Nanomaterials. The tenured position in CSIC and several research projects as IP financed by national and privately owned companies have allowed her to transfer and further explore the applications of vacuum and plasma methods to the fabrication of complex hybrid and heterostructured 1D materials. She is co-author of more than 65 peer-reviewed publications and numerous scientific presentations, including 10 invited lectures in International Symposia. She received in 2007 the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in Science from University of Seville, in 2013 the Prize to Young Scientist from the Scientific Academic of Seville and, in 2016, the Excellence in Research Prize from the City Council of Seville. Her recent article in Progress in Materials Science (Perspectives on oblique angle deposition of thin films: From fundamentals to devices, 2016) has been highlighted within the top 1% of articles cited within its area (Materials Science, Multidisciplinary, WoS, Clarivate Analytics).
