The aim of the work is to develop a method of synthesis and nanosized so-called persistent phosphors, a special type of optical nanomaterials exhibiting emission of light after the removal of the excitation source. Specifically, nanomaterials co-doped with Cr3+ and trivalent rare earth ions were investigated. Because red persistence intensity and its period are still not sufficient when compared with green and blue ones, the particular focus of the research is devoted to the red (and infra-red) emitting phosphors. Currently, the research of persistent luminescence focuses mainly on three objectives which include; the development of new red and infrared emitting materials; excitation of afterglow with blue-light emitting diode (LED) illumination; and mechanisms of persistent luminescence. In addition, red persistence can create a white display by its combination with green and blue components. Therefore, luminescence nanomaterials can now be found not only in lighting but also in areas ranging from nanoprobes in medical diagnostics, temperature sensing, through to security printing in bonds and bank notes.
